Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil)
The Sub-Divisional Officer is the chief civil officer of the sub-division. In fact, he functions as a miniature Deputy Commissioner at the sub-divisional level. He is competent to correspond directly with the Government and various departments on routine matters. He performs executive, magisterial and revenue functions.
1. Executive Functions
As an executive officer, the Sub-Divisional Officer performs various administrative duties related to the sub-division.
Main Responsibilities
- Maintenance of law and order.
- Supervision of development works.
- Monitoring of local bodies.
- Administration of motor taxation matters.
- Processing of passport-related work.
- Issue and renewal of arms licences.
- Supervision of sub-divisional establishment and administration.
2. Functions as Sub-Divisional Magistrate
As Sub-Divisional Magistrate, he is responsible for enforcing security measures and maintaining law and order within the sub-division.
Judicial and Magisterial Powers
- Enforcement of preventive measures under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
- Exercise of judicial powers under certain sections of the preventive chapters of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Appeal Authority
- Appeals against the orders of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in such matters lie before the District and Sessions Judge.
3. Revenue Functions
In revenue matters, the Sub-Divisional Officer functions as Assistant Collector Grade-I.
Revenue Responsibilities
- Supervision of revenue administration within the sub-division.
- Disposal of revenue cases and matters.
- Exercise of powers delegated by the Collector under certain Acts.
The Sub-Divisional Officer thus plays an important role in maintaining administrative efficiency, law and order, and revenue administration at the sub-divisional level.
